Appearance: Pours with a huge foamy tan head, three fingers high with great retention and a spectacular amount of lacing

Smell: Very roasty, with chocolate, molasses, vanilla and oat tones; just a hint of rum

Taste: Ashy and roasty, up front, with developing chocolate, molasses and dark fruit tones; hints of vanilla and rum build, after the swallow, as does a surprising hoppy bitterness; the hops linger into the finish along with the arrival of the cardamom; throughout, the rum flavor is subtle but increasingly apparent as the beer warms

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with significant effervescence

Overall: Stored this carefully since I picked it at Cervezorama (was one of their recommendations) on a trip to Madrid two years ago; wasn't sure what to expect given the previous review but was just blown away by the beer; very impressive and hope to try more from this brewery when I return to Spain next year

500 ml wax-sealed tap bottle. Wine glass. Enjoyed on jun´13. Pours picht black, very dark brown to the light. Medium bubbled beige foam creates a lasting crown & leaves lacing & spots on sides. Burnt malt, caramel, candy, cocoa & black bread aromas to the nose. Burnt sweet malt upfront rounded by notes of prunes & molasses is followed by sharp bitterness that lingers into an spicy & silky palate. Full body. Soft carbonation. Burnt coffee grain in the middle & dried nut astringency. Woody hints in a long bitter finish. Resins on the aftertaste. ABV well hidden. Finally hops have overwhelmed malts.
