Sampling a cellar temp12 oz bottle poured into a small snifter. Bought a 6pack at the brewery during my reunion at Allegheny. Quite a deal at $13 for the 6er. The beer pours a dark mahogany color with some ruby highlights and only a little light passing through my glass. A creamy beige head of 1 cm foams up and fades slowly to a steady edge layer.
The aroma is deep and malty with molasses and brown sugar coming through strongly and some caramel and dark chocolate. I also get a little bit of a roasted note and a little dark fruit like plums. Pretty complex nose with no hop character making a showing.
The first sip reveals an average body with very fine and spacious carbonation. The texture of the beer is sticky and coating on my palate after each sip.
Flavor is all malt, with dark chocolate and molasses mixing nicely and also a bit of roast malt and a bit of sweeter note on the finish. The finish lingers after each swallow. The booze is well hidden on the flavor and the beer is very drinkable for the 9% ABV on the label. Quite a nice little score from Meadville.
