Finally, Deth's Tar for Francophiles. This Imperial Oatmeal Stout was aged in French oak barrels that originally held Cognac, then our Mineshaft Gap barrel-aged American Barleywine. With the Cognac mostly extracted by the preceding barleywine, this Imperial Stout soaked up loads of beautiful French oak flavor and aroma. One year later, this sophisticated sipper showcases the confluence of time and French oak in our barrel-aged Stout – sublime notes of vanilla, dried stone fruit, caramel, and leather parley with dark chocolate and roast to create this one-of-a-kind take on Deth's Tar.

2018 vintage; drank 9/29/21 @ Revolution's Brewpub. Black appearance. A small tan head; minimal lace. Oak, cognac, dark chocolate, chanterelle mushroom & faint raspberry notes in the nose. Thick, creamy mouthfeel. Big flavors of oak, sweet cognac & dark chocolate; dry, boozy notes on the finish. Almost Russian Imperial Stout vibes on the base beer with nice sweet accents; definitely worth a quaff.

Had on tap. Wow this was a fun exploration into the effect of the cognac barrel in a big roasty and thick stout. Really nice nuance in the taste, adding a fascinating refined oak that was a hallmark of this beer, sweetening molasses to be more maple like, bringing out the raisin, date and a honey like finish. This all went wonderfully with the big roasted malt, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, and oat. Smell is simpler, but still showcases that wonderful french oak, cognac, molasses, slight smoke, plum, and chocolate. Feel is lighter, sweeter, but fun with cognac. A great change up for big stouts

A: Pitch black with medium brown head
S: Sweet caramel, prunes, rich bakers chocolate, cognac, oak, raisin, dates, maple
T: Cognac, dates, oak, roasted malt, bitter dark chocolate, alcohol, sweet raisin, molasses, maple
M: very creamy
O: This is a killer example of a cognac BA Stout. The barrel is very present but doesn't dominate the base
