A diabolical dose of toasted coconut accentuates the naturally-occurring wellspring of American oak flavors found in Deth’s Tar Barrel-aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout. Roasty dark chocolate, graham, and vanilla notes round out this off-sweet sipper.

DMen Tap (Chicago, Illinois) - 7/21/26 DMen Tap Bar Draft Notes: $15, 8 ounce, 15% ABV. Imperial Stout brewed with Coconut.
Appearance: Pitch black base, creamy rich brown head leaves only a rim above the base. 4.25
Aroma: Coconut, and more enticing fresh coconut after several minutes. Getting a tease of roast chocolate and barrel after a few more minutes. Seems warm enough by touch to start drinking. 4.5
Taste: Very nice mix leads off, a sharp spicy bourbon edging out the oatmeal base and generous helpings of coconut. Strong individual components, blend well. This is a sipper for certain, and the 90F temps outside is slowing me down further. Enjoying each sip. 4.75
Mouthfeel: Very rich and thick base, creamy with marginal light fizzy carbonation. Light dryness, a bit chalky, tastes at or perhaps higher than the listed 15% ABV. Smooth bourbon going down, lingering malt and vanilla sweetness I didn’t notice until now, about 15 minutes in. Bourbon aftertaste is nice. 4.50
Overall: If you like coconut, this beer is for you. If you like the taste of bourbon, this is the beer for you. If you like strong rich creamy imperial stouts, this is the beer for you. 8 oz work in this hot weather, but will save my allotment with confidence for when the nice crisp Autumn air arrives. Another top shelf DW winner. 4.5

Served on tap in a 5 oz glass. Tastes of coconut, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon. Complex combination but well balanced. Definitely a winter dessert beer. Sticks to the tongue on the aftertaste so eat a cookie with it. First time I've had a beer from this brewery.....well done!!!

Editing my rating after having a second chance to enjoy 3 weeks after my first taste. The underlying strength of the b.a. stout is the foundation upon which this and other Revolution stouts are built. I really enjoy the roasts, slightly sweet, chocolate/coffee aspects of the stout, and the booziness is very well camouflaged… it feels decadent to drink it, and it’s worth its premium price. It is a treat to sip and savor a beer like this.

Black in color with no light penetration. There’s a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering two thirds of the top. I’m smelling coconut and bourbon. I’m tasting lots of coconut and bourbon. The mouth is thick, sticky, and boozy.

12oz can. Bottom stamp for canning date is '07-03-2024'.
Black colored body, with a very thin cherry red back lit edge. Tan head wants to disappear, but some surface storm remains. No lacing.
Aroma is very deep with bourbon barrel, oak, vanilla, fudge chocolate, cherry, maple syrup, and baking spices.
Taste is fudge chocolate sweet, with brown sugar, vanilla, oak bourbon barrel, milk chocolate, and roasted malts. Coconut sits deep, is expressive and natural, but adds to the sweetness. Earthy chocolate flavors in the aftertaste. Evident level of spice (cinnamon/allspice) but at a low level. Touch of cherry.
More than medium mouthfeel. Syrup texture. Mouth and tongue coating. Good carbonation.
Candy bar stout with fudge, vanilla, and coconut.

Appearance: Pours midnight brown with a tan film; leggy with speckles descending
Smell: Toasted coconut, milk chocolate, caramel, graham cracker, walnut, and vanilla with Bourbon tones embracing
Taste: Toasted coconut, milk chocolate and vanilla bean forward, with the caramel, walnut and graham cracker emerging; through the middle, the Bourbon emerges, adding some additional caramel and boozy complexity to the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation
Overall: Coconut is a tough adjunct but Revolution does it right

Coconut flavors are really balanced here and don’t overwhelm the base /regular barrel aged flavor. Revolution makes a near perfect beer yet again

Canned 7/3/24
This is the second Deth’s Tar variant I’ve tried this week alone. The Double Barrel VSOD was fantastic as expected, but I never have been the biggest fan of coconut as the only adjunct in a beer. That being said, I trust Revolution to execute it properly. Let’s crack it open and dind out what it has to offer
Pours completely pitch black with 2 fingers of creamy dark tan head that slowly fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing
The coconut plays really well with the drier barrel notes, I’m into it. I’m picking up on aromas of toasted coconut, milk chocolate, dry oak, graham cracker, vanilla bean, raisin, earthy bourbon, light marshmallow, and burnt caramel
It’s pretty similar in taste and that’s fine by me. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting toasted coconut, vanilla bean, sweet bourbon, red grape, toffee, milk chocolate, molasses, light almond, and smooth oak. The swallow brings notes of red grape, dry oak, toasted coconut, milk chocolate, sweet bourbon, walnut, burnt caramel, vanilla bean, and molasses
A medium full body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes surprisingly dry and drinks well below its abv
Yeah, Revolution can even make a straight up coconut Stout work for me. Who would’ve guessed?
