Employing techniques common to winemaking, our so-called Barleywinery project seeks to move beer barrel aging away from ballistic, hands-off approaches toward something more intentful, where various production inputs can manipulate the way any given barrel of beer “ages” over time. Last year we released Barleywinery Double Barrel V.S.O.J., our first packaged release from the then-experimental oxidation-arresting aging conditions. After another year in-barrel, this entry is a sizable step forward in our aim to produce balanced beers with the absolute highest levels of intensity and complexity without sacrificing drinkability. This single batch of extra-sweet Straight Jacket English-style Barleywine rested in a combination of bourbon and rye whiskey barrels for eighteen months before being rebarreled for an equal measure in French Cherry Liqueur (Cerise) casks. Each of the latter was dosed with a variety of supplemental fire-toasted French oaks. Wood-oven brioche, vanilla spice, and tart cherry emanate with each leggy swirl, while heaps of weapons-grade French oak keep this malty behemoth’s finish nice and tidy.

Revolution Taproom (Chicago, Illinois) - 5/21/26 Revolution Taproom Brewery notes: Double Bourbon Barrel & Cherry Liqueur Barrel Aged Barleywine. Barleywinery D.B.X.O.J. La Cerise. 16.5% ABV, $14.41 with tax 10 oz snifter glass draft pour.
Appearance: Pitch black base, tan white bubbly head congregates around the rim, no cover over the base. 4.25
Aroma: French oak, cinnamon toast, Chex mix, and cherry after letting this warm a dozen minutes. Light in strength, but digging what I can gather. 3.75
Taste: Much stronger flavor experience, Straight Jacket loud and clear and very enjoyable. Very smooth rye bourbon, this is the star of the show. Cherry in perfect measure, puts the cherry on top. Everything is so smooth and wonderful, bursts with flavor, the rye is the star here. 4.75
Mouthfeel: Thus is very strong, hits you from go, but zero harshness as this is one of the smoothest strong beers I can recall over a dozen years of BA beers. Just chilling and savoring the experience. Rye is my favorite, and this showcases it as well as their excellent Ryeway to Heaven. Straight Jacket is one of my favorite Barleywine, and this drinks like a perfect cuvée. Rye excellence start to finish, cherry compliments vs. over powers. Perfect. 5.0
Overall: This is an excellent pour. Still intimidated to buy 19.2 oz cans due to the strength, but even at the halfway pole, taking it slow and just savoring the experience. Transcendental, Marty is the master at barrel aging. 5.0

Had on tap. Brown opaque body with a hint of red on the edges, beige ring and surface islands. Big cherry with sneaky vanilla and oak tones to go with the barley and oak in the smell and taste. Smells has with all of this general dark fruit and caramel. Taste has clear raisin, molasses, and fig. Feel has considerable sugars to go with the boozier barrel and milder barley. Dessert anyone?

Had on tap at Deep Wood release 11/14/25. Excellent. The Cherry Brandy barrels are complimentary and delicious.

Canned 1/7/26; drank 1/29/26 @ the Yarchives.
Opaque dark brown appearance.
A rough pour yielded a small, noisy tan head which quickly dissipated; no lacing remained.
Red wind, cream soda, dill & mild cherry liqueur notes in the nose.
Thick, mildly sticky mouthfeel.
Caramel, strong wood & mild cherry liqueur flavors. Once warm, a hint of booze heat emerged.
This is better than the previous Barleywinery take on aged Straight Jacket, which is surprising to me as any additions to the base beer besides an oak bath usually diminish the end result for me. However, perhaps the even-more extended aging calmed the base so much that a hint of cherry enlivens this. It's still far from my favorite Deep Wood beer, but it's absolutely worth trying.
