This single barrel of sweet component Straight Jacket was aged for thirteen months in a Cognac barrel with a double dose of new, fire-toasted French oak. The firmer tannic structure in this singular example presents leaner on the finish despite its elevated malt profile compared to the main Mineshaft Gap release.

Had on tap. Pitch blackish brown opaque pour with a beige ring. Smell is laced with the french oak, with cognac backed caramel, brown sugar, barley and dark fruit in the nose. Taste swaps out caramel for molasses, but yeah the oak is dominant. Feel is barrel driven all the way, the usual mineshaft textures are there with barley, sugars, booze and malt in a smooth and sticky delivery. Prefer the original

Had on tap at Deep Wood release 1/23/26. So good. The Cognac isn’t overdone and the oak is delicious.

4/11/26 - (Revolution Brewery) (Chicago, IL)): $15.45 with tax 10 oz draft pour. Cognac barrel aged barleywine with French Oak.
Appearance: 10 oz draft into a snifter glass yields a near pitch black base, creamy fine bubble rich tan white head lingers a few minutes before settling a creamy ring around the rim and razor thin bubble carbonation island over nearly half the base. 4.5
Aroma: I let this warm for about ten minutes toward proper temperature, yielding the French oak cinnamon, a nice backing cognac and oak. Solid. 4.25
Taste: Consistent with the aroma, with the cognac leading and working really well with the straight jacket base. The French oak comes through very nice, a slight Smokey flavor to it, contrasted nicely with a sweet caramel. This all blends together creating a sum greater than the parts. Most excellent. 5.0
Mouthfeel: Drinks dry easy, perhaps too easy, for this 13.1% strength. Minimal gentle carbonation, medium to full sticky body., creamy, rich and delicious. Sweet caramel and cognac here, with the oak barrel also shining through start to finish. 4.75
Overall: This is dangerously good. Light and easy at least until you get hit halfway in, bustin with a great barrel treatment. Don’t recall this much oak by memory on previous deep woods offering, and really getting the caramel I don’t get as succinctly on standard Straight Jacket. This truly is a money barrel and excellent example of what Marty Scott and his team create year round. Highly recommend! 4.75

I had this on draft 1/25/26 @ Revolution's taproom.
Opaque brown/orange appearance.
Minimal khaki head; no lacing remained.
Cognac, wood, mild caramel & faint chocolate notes in the nose.
Smooth, medium thick mouthfeel.
Rich cognac flavor up front; wood & faint chocolate notes on the finish. As this warmed, caramel & warming booze heat notes emerged.
Elegant, easy to drink and easy to enjoy. 10/10, no notes from me. A Deep Wood stunner.
