A nod to one of our favorite draft variants from the past few years, this single barrel of Deth’s Tar was aged for five years in a Jepson’s Malört barrel. Wood tannin is minimal from the third-use American oak cask, allowing the spirit’s supple herbaceousness to provide balance to this inky black, super-aged stout.

Had on tap. The shock of the day! This was somehow against all odds, good?!? As a malort hater, wow I’m stunned. The stout stands up to it, with the malort barrel pushing roasted malt, bitter sweet chocolate, and dried dark fruit forward more, still get a hint of pencil shavings on the finish. The smell still has gasoline, but again bonds decently to the deep wood stout trappings. Feel is warmer and slightly thinner but by no means thin, drier and chewier.

I had this on draft 1/25/26 @ Revolution's taproom.
Black appearance.
Big dark tan head; minimal lacing remained.
Chocolate, waffle cone & faint menthol notes in the nose.
Thick, sticky mouthfeel.
Sweeeeeet milk chocolate flavor up front; faint menthol notes on the finish. Wood notes emerged as this warmed.
Almost like a mint chocolate chip ice cream, this is simple but surprisingly effective. Far better than it had any right to be.
