This was brewed in 'steam beer' tradition (though the beer can not be called a 'Steam Beer'- it is referred to as 'California Common'). We used a lager yeast strain at warmer fermentation temperatures, so the resulting beer has more fruity esters than a traditional lager. We also took inspiration from a former Central California brewpub that brewed the style, and used whole Glacier hops in the brew for floral hop aroma, and a medium bitter hop finish.

Poured from tap into a mug club mug. Pours a medium golden color with a nice head.

Balanced with good aromas of citrus, malts, crackers and a touch of pears. Lacking some depth though.

Smooth with a very nice feel. The flavors of pears, crackers, and malts are nice and balanced.

A very good steam beer. Nice and very drinkable.

Picked up my member's mug when it was released.

A: Pours darker amber with a finger and half of white foam.

S: Lagerish; it has a little funk and a nice amount of citrusy hops.

T: Juicy. The hops play a nice little number with the fruity lager yeast. Sweet caramel undertones keep the flavour present, but it does have that smooth lager drinkability.

Overall: I like it. There are several styles that are underbrewed or misunderstood. Steam beer is one. This is a classic, flavourful, but controlled style and Chicago Common is an excellent representation. My only gripe is that this is coming out now...seems like more of a Summer beer.
