Alderaan is a Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout brewed with Pale Ale malt as the base and a host of wonderful specialty malts such as Roasted Barley, Black, and Dark Crystal from the Thomas Fawcett’s malt house in England. We also incorporated both flaked oats and oat malt in the mash to impart a rich silky mouthfeel and texture. Alderaan has complex malt flavors and aromas reminiscent of dark baker’s chocolate, fresh brewed coffee, and caramel candy. Hop additions impart a clean, balanced bitterness and hints of earthy-spiciness dancing around the intense malt backbone. Don't be fooled by the smooth easy drinking nature of this robust dark ale, it packs quite a punch! This is a very limited offering; the rest of the batch went into bourbon barrels earlier this year and will emerge this fall. Cheers!

On-tap at the brewpub. Served in a 5oz taster glass.
A - Dark tan foam settles to a collar, some wisps, and splotchy lacework. Black body, with a hint of dark brown at the edges of the glass.
S - Loads of anise, molasses, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and a bit of black malt and char. There's a bit of alcohol present, and a nebulous flavor evocative of candi sugar that I tend to get from Belgian stouts.
T - The taste is also quite heavy on black licorice, dark chocolate, roast, and perhaps a touch of caramel, molasses, and dark fruit. Alcohol is better hidden here, but there's a good deal of bitterness and char lingering into the finish.
M - Full-bodied, chewy, viscous, and sticky, with carbonation on the lower side of moderate. A bit of alcohol warmth, but nothing excessive for 10%. Lingers on the palate long after swallowing.
D - A very nice stout that is a bit evocative of Kuhnhenn's American Imperial Stout. The big body and flavor profile should make this quite ideal for barrel-aging, which was the main purpose of this beer. Looking forward to Deth's Tar in a few months.

Inky black with tan mocha foam that left behind random arcs of lacing in the glass. Pretty good coverage, lasting skim across the surface.
Charred malt with a little bit of dried fruit sweetness present. As it warms it's a little more rounded and smooth. Body is a little sharp, a mild astringency keeps it from achieving a requisite smoothness. Flavors of toast, slightly acrid blackened malts, roasty coffee, dried dark fruits. Full bodied and substantial, moderate carbonation carries it across the palate well. The sharpness may be from the alcohol, not sure. It seems to taper off a little as it warms to room temperature. Otherwise it's a pretty nice RIS for a relatively cool August night.
