on tap at crail following one of the most memorable round of my life. im not sure how different this is from their normal lager, which is loosely a helles, this could be labeled just for the course but be the same beer, it was unclear to me, but it does drink pretty similar, maybe a little less robust at the course, slightly less crisp too, more mineral forward and earthy, could be a slightly different recipe, maybe less late hops, maybe its the exact same thing and the keg at the course was just a little older than what we had back in town in st andrews. pale and just past golden tinted, more or less the same as their original lager. i think i get a tad more sweetness and almost doughy yeast character in this one, brassy and honey-like, short of toasted, less german maybe, but it really hits pretty similar, if a touch less refined to me, generically bready, nice body to it, enough carbonation to make it really drinkable and refreshing. good with the fish and chips, but anything would have been satisfying in this context, this place rules. it seems conceivable that a modest sized operation like this could do a custom beer like this for the course, or two i guess, alongside their crail ale, but its awfully similar, if just a bit less impressive and tight to me, to their original lager. either way, a joy to drink at the course with family after a special day! these guys make very solid beers.
