500 mL bottle, with best before (Apr 2013). Pours a jet black colour, and a coffee tan soapy head (about one finger). This leaves an excellent film and lace.
Aromas are quite forward with strong coffee, roast malt, dark chocolate notes. A bit of a burnt caramel sensation. Quite roasty, with a pronounced bitterness.
Taste has an initial bitterness of coffee grounds and an undertow of fruitiness. Bitter chocolate and toffee notes as well, a bit of a cherry fruitiness. Pretty well incorporated, and the balance is pretty good, though it lacks a wow factor and has a couple rough edges toward the end.
Mouthfeel is pretty malty, the oats lend a nice smoothness and this drinks very nicely. A bit of the bitterness in front and a great balance. The finish is crisp, malty, but pretty unpronounced. Very drinkable, bitterness is restrained but complements the roasty malt. Although I tend to prefer bigger stouts, this is quite nice and refreshing.
A very solid interpretation. This brewery has done some great work recently and it is great to see them succeeding and putting out new exciting brews. This particular beer offers a lot of flavour and a good complexity. Pretty drinkable, better than average, quality beer. For what it is meant to be, a well-made local beer in a fairly traditional style its a winner.
