Cask (handpump) at the Darlington Spring Thing Beer Festival. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, low head. Moderate aroma and flavour of fruity and piney American hops, in a more subdued English version of an APA. Quite nice.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2014. Acquired some time back from the York Beer & Wine shop. The label calls it an American-influenced amber ale.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep orange-amber hue with plenty of floating sediment and light carbonation. Yields a decent head of white foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of earthy yeast, mild grass/hay, faint stewed hops and a whiff of buttery diacetyl. Rather uninspired.
Tastes of caramel malt with a yeasty character and a dry finish. Notes of grain, mild caramel, earthy yeast, grass/hay and stewed hops. A twinge of diacetyl in the background, followed by a leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of earthy yeast, harsh stewed leaves and faint malt.
OK, though nowt special. Looks alright but the head doesn't hang around. The aroma and flavour are quite yeasty, balanced by caramel and faint hops. The diacetyl is an unwelcome addition. Body is OK. Little hop aroma to speak of - I'm wondering where the 'American influence' is. Or perhaps this bottle is just a bit too old. Doesn't trouble my tastebuds all that much - no need to seek it out.

Strawberry blonde with loose lumpy sandstone froth that speckles.
Lots of butterscotch with maybe a hint of orange peel.
Mango and peach, a bit of peanut and toffee cookie, then rosin, orange peel and spruce hops.
Apricot finish and drying piney linger.
Lt-med, fizzy, clean.
The nose lies, happily - this is a light and lively APA. Nice trifecta of fruit, sharp hops and buttery malts. US-influenced British brewing at its best.
