Clear, deep amber to copper (SRM 14-16). The two-inch creamy almond head lasts several minutes.Thick patches of lace are left on a Spieglau IIPA glass. Tiny bubbles of carbonation race upward from within.
The aroma is sweet and malty, in particular similar to brown sugar and sun-brewed tea. There is also some wet pine straw.
This has a bitterness similar to an East Coast IPA. In general, I think it is more akin to old school British IPAs. It is somewhat balanced with sweetness similar to strong tea. The finish is strong and lingering and continues the bittersweet balance until the end where it becomes all bitter. Caramel exists throughout and becomes especially strong as it warms.
It has a smooth, medium to full body with alcohol well below expectation. The texture is slick, while carbonation is scrubbing.
Aside from the alcohol content, I don't see this as an IIPA. It is a solid beer that will pair well with wings or poppers. The giant aqua Adirondack chair with a full glass of foamy, dark beer sitting on the armrest, is a nice, whimsical landmark.
