Hopcellerator pours a copper color, with little head. Fresh floral hoppy aroma. Flavor has earth notes, with big fresh floral hop flavors. Good body and feel. Overall a very decent and drinkable IPA.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an amber color and a cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.
S: A decent aroma of hops, malt, citrus, and pine.
T: Tasted of a moderate amount of malt, some citrus notes (orange, in particular), a gigantic heap of grassy hops, a bit of resiny pine, and light tropical fruit (mango). An interesting flavor that's a bit out of whack. The hops content is a bit too aggressive for my taste, but the other elements aren't bad.
F: A good amount of carbonation with an overly bitter, yet dry finish. Medium-bodied.
O: This is an uneven beer in most respects. The flavor's not quite there, but the beer has some good attributes.

Susquehanna Brewing Co. "Hopcellerator"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: An average pour (maybe I should have been rougher) brings up a very hazy golden-orange body that rests gently beneath a finger-thick head of white. It's hard to see the bubbles rising within the glass, and it doesn't seem to be that carbonated. In the aroma grainy malt and citrusy hops seem to be about on the same level, mixing well, but not coming off as boldly hoppy and hop-focused as a West coast IPA should be. At the very least the hops should be brighter. Just using Pacific Northwest hops is no longer enough in my book to call a beer a West coast IPA. It should have no caramel malts, or very close to it; really lean heavily towards the hop flavors to the point that the malt is just a platform for them and it's almost out of balance; and it should be drier and more perceptively bitter. Moving forward, the flavor also includes a bit too much malt character and sweetness, although it's on the edge. I'm getting a little bit of caramel malt (or something like it), but regardless, the hops aren't popping! It's citrusy but I can't really pick out anything specifically beyond grapefruit and orange. There's some pine, and there's some peach and mango which I associate with Citra, but again, nothing is bright and clear. It's firmly bitter, a touch on the lower end for the style, although it works, and it finishes dry with some pine and earth and bitterness lingering. So I'll stop my bitching but it doesn't seem like a West coast IPA to me, it's more of a blend in my eyes, part East coast and part West coast - which in all honesty makes for a more balanced beer. Medium-bodied with a moderate carbonation level that leaves it gently crisp and then smooth. Conclusion: decent enough but very mainstream and tame. I understand what Susquehanna does and they do it very well, but if they're going to head into a little bit of a different territory they're going to need to step it up or get lost in the crowd.

DATE: June 24, 2017... OCCASION: Big Bass Lake with the Morgans--can’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a NEPA beer!... GLASSWARE: Heineken pokal... pours a thick white head that tabletops with substance... near-perfect lacing... lively carbonation--a stampede of bubbles herds upward in a golden body... I like the look of this... boisterous hop impact, with resin and pine at the fore... orange lemon, fruity esters play and punch the nostrils...a promising aroma... hop-forward profile only offers a mild bitterness at its finish, with a strong, lingering, enjoyable aftertaste... slightly chewy with a thick, stout body... West Coast indeed--easy pine/resin one-two that smoothly invites a puckering finish... lemon and orange are not balanced by very light dough malts... shopping for local brews and familiar with Susquehanna, this beer took me by some surprise--they placed this style well, crafting a beer that pairs well with grill fare and sunny summer days... belying its 7% ABV well, it encourages its next sip... maybe not distinguishable from other IPAs, but that can't be held against a solid beer...
