Pours a dark amber color with a ruby hue, medium effervescence and a finger of dense, rocky, light tan head. Good retention and decent lacing for the ABV.
The aroma is musty and yeasty at first, with a lot of malt depth beneath — caramel, baseball mitt, cherry, vanilla custard.
Smooth, malty complexity carries over to the taste, again with the caramel, custard and leather. Some more of that mustiness, some stale, earthy hops and a slight metallic element all contribute to a type of dryness in the finish (at least for a beer that’s so malt-driven). There’s plenty of alcohol heat there as well.
Full bodied with lively carbonation.
You could definitely put this in the “barleylager” category. There’s an interesting mix of caramel and vanilla flavors going up against musty, earthy, metallic flavors here. Very enjoyable.
