What starts English, biscuity and sweet ends with a lush taste of hazelnut as the brewers at Props take the traditional dark beer and add a spicy American twist.
Simply named Hazelnut Brown Ale, the medium brown beer pours slightly darker at the center and more amber-like at its margins. A thin but persistent eggshell froth swirls to release a tantalizing scent of toffee, chocolate, coffee and hazelnut. Sweet on the early palate, a firm malt influence brings a range of caramel, toffee, butterscotch and chocolate to its taste.
Sweetness rolls along the tongue confidently and revealing flavors of pecan and cashew that are natural to brown ale. Light coffee and chocolate shed light on a slightly robust, toasted and savory character. Light hopping rates are woodsy and broadly bitter to take the slightest edge off of the sweetness. But the overwhelming flavor of hazelnut has us tasting the flavors of fall.
Medium full on the palate, the beer's light carbonation allows the ale to sit firmly on the tongue and saturate the tastebuds fully with malt sweetness and the sweeter, more vanilla-like impressions from hazelnut. Hints of creme brûlée come in a medium long aftertaste of savory sweetness and soft spice.
