coffee beer has definitely been my thing over the past few months, and i have taken basically every opportunity to drink coffee beers, no matter what styles. its cool to have a coffee lager, especially a very good traditional european dark one, i think its a great base for good coffee, and this one seems to use some quality java, definitely blended in post fermentation. i like this type of thing, no dark roasted unmalted barley or black malts getting in the way of the coffee, all of that low end here is from the beans, with the malt in the dunkel lager type not much more than a chocolate and dark crystal type. i like the coffee filling this role by itself separate from the grains, it lets the drinker appreciate its contribution a little more, and i think it flavors the beer a lot more this way, its not all packed into the finish, although thats certainly where it seems most intense for me still. smooth and roasty, some toasted chestnut autumnal earthiness too, and that thin vein of long boiled sweetness, great balance. i taste the lager yeast more than i feel it, as this isnt as clean and crisp as some, but i like the way the coffee keeps the finish long and mellow, and i like the classic european flavor the lager yeast contributes. really tasty and sessionable beer, lots of coffee character. yum!
