This poured a slightly hazy cherry mahogany with no head. It smelled like raisin and honey wheat and rich caramel, with almonds and butter and orange and plastic. It tasted like honey and toffee and caramel and wheat bread, with raisins and almonds and plastic, along with a bit of orange peel and alcohol. It was somewhat thick with no carbonation, and had a lasting sweet and sour aftertaste. Overall this wasn't as dark or complex as the older Bass Royal Ales, but it still had a very strong scent and flavor. This was definitely a delight to sip, with great bittersweet characteristics. Another fantastic beer that has stood the test of time (although not as ancient as the King's or Prince's ales).

Imperial quart poured into snifters.
A = Medium garnet with great clarity, completely still.
S = Sweet maple fudge, slight sourness underneath like a pickled and salted prune, really a great mixture of scents showing off both the strong malt syrup base and perhaps light amount of brett(?) as sometimes happens to old English barleywines.
T = Bittersweet cocoa, plums, caramel, small amount of green apple, orange rind, pipe tobacco.
M = Warm feeling but not hot, still alcohol is clearly present, medium body, good mouthcoating.
D = Goes down extremely smoothly. Could certainly drink more of these.

Bought this through ebay from England this past summer. Label says "July 15th 1977". Cork finished & wax covered,very dark brown embossed bottle. Time and air were not kind to this beer. The cork was very dry and crumbled. The beer poured totally flat and very cloudy. The color was dark brown. Aroma was heavy dark ripe fruit. Flavor was a chemically bitter YUCK. Undrinkable. *sigh*
