Part of the Bass Royal Ales series. Water for the mash started on July 5, 1982 by the Earl of Spencer to mark his grandson's birth, Prince William of Wales.
Tasted on March 13, 2010. Thanks to Traquairlover for sharing!
This poured a clear dark gold with no head. It smelled like honeyed almonds and white wine vinegar, with lemon and orange zest and alcohol and caramel. It tasted like sweet honeyed almonds and light tobacco, with some caramel and spiced wheat bread and honeysuckle, with a bit of faint chocolate covered pineapple and confectioners sugar. It was watery with no carbonation, and had a sweet aftertaste. Overall this was a super delicate beer that requires a very refined palate to detect all the scent and flavor elements. But if you sip carefully enough, they are all there and fantastic. Very light and refreshing compared to some of the more robust Bass Royal ales, with even a bit of hops still noticeable (which is amazing for a 28 year old beer)! Great balance and a joy to sample.
