Presentation: Once again the uniform lines of the brown brick building that houses the Huisbrouwerij Old Bailey played host to Wakefield CAMRA during our annual Belgium Trip on Sunday 27th April, 2005. Our last visit here was Easter 1999, some 6 years ago. The neat & massive interior remains, as does the beer range, plus one new addition. However, the exceptionally shiny and clean Home Brewery looks hardly used these days
sparking continued rumors of contract brewed beers, something we could not confirm - nor deny - despite several discussions with the wait staff.
The last of the 6 Old Bailey brews which I tried was the St. Honoré Wit.
Appearance: Hazed lemon juice body with a soft but expansive white head. Classic Belgium Wit cum Hoegaarden presentation. Thankfully this one did *not* come with a lemon.
Nose: Sharp wheat and lots of soft citric lemons. Spritzy and fresh.
Taste: Dry and lightly spiced, citric lemons and a zesty body. Fresh and inviting, soft yet sharp and very clean. Light bitterness with an attractive wheaty finish.
Mouthfeel: Soft precious feel on the tongue. Light but fulfilling, conditioning is prevalent but not demanding on the senses. Perfect.
Drinkability: Highly quaffable, on its own, or with food, but best with cheese and/or those funky little Belgium pretzel snacks.
Overall: Reminded me of Dentergems Witbier, which I always enjoy. One of the better Old Bailey brews, if not the best one. Given its fresh feel and light strength, this is the best one to start with I feel, which is ironic as I finished with it.
