12oz snifter consumed at Iron Goat for $5. The only other place I know of where this is on is Blackbird. This is a collaboration with Bale Breaker, and is brewed with blood oranges, and features Citra and "experimental hops (I believe this is the heart of Bale Breaker's contribution)," and is 6.5% abv and clocks in at 70 IBUs. It was brewed for Spokane Craft Beer Week, and I imagine it to be a one-time beer.
This was a densely cloudy orange-honey color, with a minimal white foam as it's head. Said head dropped quickly, but never quite disappeared.
The blood oranges dominated the nose. Heroic efforts by the workers at the olfactory revealed a slightly citrusy and spicy hoppiness, but it was pretty well steamrolled by the oranges.
The taste mostly followed the aroma, though the fruitiness is more complex, venturing into sour territory. It reminded me at first of a big, orange infused Berlinerweisse. The hops kick in at the finish, which is spicy and fairly dry, but it's not a massive, overbearing "thwack" to the tastebuds so much as a subtle reminder that this is an IPA.
Medium bodied, with a dry, slightly puckering mouthfeel.
This is a fascinating beer, delicious and drinkable, but I kinda wish the hoppiness was a little more assertive, or maybe the oranges were dialed back just a smidge. Still, it's a very tasty beer that I will continue to drink so long as it's on at Iron Goat.
