12oz snifter consumed at Iron Goat for $6.
An opaque, russet color, with an initially enthusiastic tan colored head that dropped to a foam collar in about 3-4 minutes.
The nose is dominated by cloves, though there's also bits of brown sugar, plums and pipe tobacco in the mix. As it warms, the spices become more dominant.
Spicy leadoff flavor, with the sweet and savory aspects noted above in the nose somewhat prominent in the background. About three quarters of the way through is when some alcoholic heat makes it's presence felt, along with something that reminds me of Maraschino cherries. Modesty dry at the swallow, but not in a hoppy way.
Medium bodied, with a coating, slightly creamy mouthfeel. This is probably the category where things are least to style. That light effervescent one would find in a decent Belgian-brewed example of the style just isn't what's happening here, a common flaw of American stabs at Belgian styles.
Like many American versions of Abbey Ales, this is a pretty tasty beer that falls short of matching the best Belgian-brewed examples of the style. St. Bernardus isn't within walking distance of my humble abode, however, so I'll still happily drink this.
