a neat coffee version of their house oatmeal stout, and an excellent beer, really was into this one. its served on nitro at their taproom, and the coffee is really robust in it, bitter and drying, nice with the little bit of yeast character there at the finish, and the smoothness of the dark grain. this is unique for a couple of reasons. one, the malt is dark but not as bitter as it sometimes is at this level of roast, the bitter element seems to come almost entirely from the coffee, which is definitely a darker roast and quite liberally dosed here. second, this is so dry, there really is no middle malt sweetness to it at all, but its also not thin, its rich feeling but never conventionally malty at all, which i really like, and that you can taste some of the yeast in here is cool too. the coffee is strong, hints of smoke and chocolate to it, but the beer drinks mellow, low alcohol is awesome, and the body feels creamy on nitro, a perfect beer for this format. a most excellent coffee stout here, ill need to track down the original when i am in spokane again in a few weeks, but i was real impressed with this. maybe the best dark beer i had while i was in washington!
