32oz crowler purchased at the brewery. Richard is an imperial stout that has been aged in casks that previously held Dry Fly wheat whiskey, one of three under the Troll Crusher banner.
Poured into a Kane snifter (thanks again, MacMalt), this was inky black, with a good-sized khaki-colored head. Spotty lace.
Whiskey-dominated nose. There's some dark roasted malt aroma, and a whiff of dark fruits, but it's the whiskey's show.
Whiskey up front in the flavor as well. Lots of boozy "heat." What's different from the nose is just how big the chariot Dark fruit flavor is. The middle of this beer is dominated by that. The finish is an amalgamation of that cherryishness, the whiskey, and the more traditional, cocoa and molasses-like flavors of a stout.
To be honest, the mouthfeel is thin for the style. It's the biggest flaw of this beer.
In a year that that expensive time and space consuming beers such as this is going to be hard to find, at least on the local basis, this is pretty good stuff. The fact that it's one third of a project of barrel-aged Stouts is especially encouraging. I really enjoy this. I hope it doesn't get wiped out too soon at iron goat.
