Unleash the Freak.

Freak King is an all-new, brilliantly badass Imperial India Pale Ale that packs a tremendous punch of earthy, dank Columbus and Amarillo hop aromas and flavors. Fermented with an experimental yeast strain that yields a crisp, clean texture along side some darker stone fruit notes, this 9.5% ABV beer is your magic portal to weirdness.

Pours a darker amber/orange color with a large head. Aroma is stone and tropical fruit with some alcohol. Taste is the same with minimal hop bitterness. BOD 7-1-2023

19.2oz can from Boise Co-op. Dark golden body of rough pour yields a thick, foamy white head that lasts. Aroma is malty, hoppy, woody, earthy. Taste follows with toffee malts and a nice helping of bittering hops, piney, mild astringency. Light sweetness.

Poured from 19.2oz tall can into a dimpled mug. No date on the can.

Appearance: good orange hue with just a hint of haze and a big foam of orangey-tan head.

Smell: sweetly malty with a citrusy hop character; there's also kind of a soapy element to it that, while not terrible, doesn't totally work for me.

Taste: sweet indeed, with a bit of a toasty character. Hops are kind of lemony and a little bit, how can I say, musty, with a moderate bitterness (there's a lot of sweetness to stand up to here). Again, not great, not terrible.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is an okay beer, but not the greatest thing out there. I think that these big 19.2oz cans of DIPA that you see all over the place now are the new malt liquor -- a cheap gas station buzz. Kinda makes me sad -- usually I really like Silver City, and kinda think less of them for jumping on this bandwagon -- but ... I guess it's better than Old English!

Pours a clear dark orange, near brown brew with plenty of foam in the chalice. Seriously fruity, massively hopped. It would taste more like alcohol except for the sugar and the orange taste, not to mention the eye-opening bitterness. If you stopped to notice the aroma it is something in the citrus line. Mouthfeel is very sharp and spritzy.

Here's another tall can of jet fuel from the local market cooler along with the other juice and alcohol bombs in the convenient 19.2 oz size. You could actually drink this, though I'll put mine back in the fridge to add some flavor to the latest Cold IPA. I may buy into their slogan: "your magic portal to weirdness." Well, weirdly strong, anyway. Dated on the side of the shrink-wrapped label: 03/15/2023.

Pint canned on 06/07/22. Limited edition from Silver City. Served in a pint glass. Deep red amber in color, with excellent clarity and big head. Looks great, but I'm afraid this might be an imperial red ale or red IPA. Aroma does bring a bit of toasty malt and I don't think there's any dry hopping here at all. Huh.

Flavor has a balance between crystal malts and alpha bitterness. And at 9.5% ABV it's remarkably (dangerously) drinkable. However the hops are serving to balance out the malt and residual sugar don't bring much in the way of flavor. At least to my palate. This beer is 3 months old and certainly could be fresher but I wouldn't expect it to be ruined.

Silver City Brewery says this was "fermented with an experimental yeast strain that yields a crisp, clean texture along side some darker stone fruit notes." And maybe if this is a vehicle for trying out a new yeast, sure, I think the yeast did an excellent job here. But I wish they'd done something which accentuated the Columbus and Amarillo dankness better though.

Cool label art too.
