This beer is incredibly close to Sam Adam's Winter Lager. My father and I did a blind taste test with these 2. The only minor differences that stuck out were the following: JT Whitney's had a darker amber color and retained its head about 30 seconds longer. JT Whitney's is slightly heavier on the palate. There is more of a musty smell and flavor to the Whitney's offering. Other than that, these beers were nearly identical.

I sampled a pint of the Winter Biere de Garde, served at the brewpub. This beer pours out a dark brown color with no head. It seems that no beer at J.T. Whitney's can hold a head. The malty aroma is nice, but sort of one dimensional. The flavor is malty, though not very sweet. Although they call this a Biere de Garde, I would be quite surprised if this beer isn't a lager. Earthy malty flavor with the taste of alcohol very noticable. Medium hop flavor, though the hop bitterness is more noticable than the flavor. Seems more like a bock than a biere de garde, but it doesn't matter to me what they call it. The flavor is pretty good. This is a decent malty beer for the winter months.
