341ml bottle poured into tulip 10/6/16

A clear copper, slow bubbles feed a dense thumbs width of tan foam that has great retention slowly falling to a thin film leaving several partial rings

S very earthy, plums and cherries, heaps of rye malt, more fruit I can't place, has a little wet, woody funk, some caramel, maybe some bourbon but I don't think this one saw a barrel, an odd mix but it works

T much like the nose, spicy, bready, mild funk, odd fruity notes, its different but I like it

M leaning towards full, enough bubbles to cream it up and then it flattens out, mild heat, sticky on the lips, a spicy, sour fruit finish

O this ones a bit of an odd ball but it all comes together and it works, unlike many rye beers this in this one it stands out

This would be an interesting one to age, its fairly mellow fresh but could use a little time under the stairs, would be interesting to see what the funk would get up to

9% abv, N/A ibu, 341ml bottle.
A - clear redish brown, copper with thin light brown head, lacing.
S - cherry, plum, currant, funky, rye spicy, earthy, yeasty, toasty, smoky, coffee.
T - mild carbonation, medium body, yet smooth syrupy. very favorable, cherry sweetness yet not overpowering, a little bit like rum infused, tartness balances, coated with rye malt spiciness (whiskey), and then bitterness, ran out dry n quick. given such abv, alcohol is well hidden.
O - its delicious, lambic yeast did really nice job here, carbonated plum juice, could be drank as after dinner dessert beer. so easy drinking, that shoulda watch out for the knock. top 4 of the 12, no doubt.

341ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a deep, clear copper-red with one finger of beige head that leaves yawning monster mouth lace as it recedes.

Smells of boozy dark fruit, funky yeast, apple pie spice, brown sugar on toast and ghosty green hops.

Tastes of spicy stewed fruit, dark toffee, thankfully mild funk, caramel square and more faint hops.

Feels big and smooth. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Finishes off-dry.

Verdict: Recommended. I have had quite enough of this brettanomyces nonsense, though.

Pours a clear dark amber colour with a finger thick beige head that dissipated quite quickly leaving a layer of thick bubbles floating in islands of cream. The nose is quite malty with hints of Demerara sugar, dark vine fruits and baking spices. Have a hard time placing the exact spices but it reminds me of holiday baking. The rye flavours definite come out in the taste along with some semi-sweet malts, over ripened fruits, earthy hop bitterness and a slightly musty flavour. Normally not a big fan of the musty flavour but it seems to work here balancing well with the higher ABV burn and lingering hop bitterness in the edges of the taste. The mouthfeel is in the medium range with a pretty active carbonation that tingles the tip of your tongue and lasts until you next sip. A pretty good ale that has quite a bit of complexity and lots going on.

My first foray into this year's Brews Brothers mixer pack. Hooray - it's like an April advent calendar. I couldn't resist popping the box and singing "Hello, hello/Is there anybody in there?" This is a complex, sweet, big hitting ale that doesn't dick around. The promise of rye spice is somewhat masked in dark fruit. The initial promise gets a bit confusing, so drinking this brew was not unlike trying to watch the film version of The Wall.

341ml bottle, part of the Brews Brothers Vol. Two mixed pack, and a collaboration with Category 12 Brewing, which has resulted in a 'Rye Old Ale' - fantastic! And they've chosen a suitable classic rock song accompaniment in Pink Floyd's arguably best known effort from The Wall - relax, I'm just giving you some information first.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium bronzed amber colour, with one measly finger of weakly puffy, broadly foamy, and mostly bubbly beige head, which leaves some roiling sea froth lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.

It smells of funky and earthy yeast, a robust dark berry fruitiness, gritty and grainy pale malt, a suggestion of spicy rye, some subtle dank mustiness, and very understated leafy, weedy, and floral hop bitters. The taste is bready and crackery pale malt, a still second class citizen rye graininess, muddled citrus and dark berry fruity notes, a nicely restrained, but still kind of funky and musty dank cellar thing, and more plain leafy, weedy, and floral noble hoppiness.

The bubbles are pretty tame in their low-registering frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and sort of smooth, as the more or less unexpected funk extracts its typical tithe here. It finishes off-dry, with a lingering berry fruitiness, and a weak hoppy offset.

Well, for a 9-pointer, this is surprisingly easy to drink, even with that guest Brett unpleasantness. The rye gets lost in the mire, and the hops are barely capable of maintaining a sense of balance, yet it doesn't seem to really matter. You can certainly disagree with this, even though your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying.
