16oz glass at the Edmonton Whyte Ave location - this is the other house brew for the Famoso chain of Neapolitan-style restaurants across Canada.
This beer appears a glassy, medium bronzed amber colour, with one finger of puffy, foamy, and creamy off-white head, which leaves a bit of stringy and streaky lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of fairly bready and grainy pale malt, biscuity toffee, muted generic citrus, soft stone fruit pith, and some weak leafy and piney green hoppiness. The taste is semi-sweet, doughy caramel malt, a waning toffee sweetness, mixed citrus and apple/pear fruity notes, a bit of wayward son yeastiness, and more plain leafy and piney hop bitters.
The bubbles are on the moderate side, what with the increasingly wan frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with a small airy creaminess. It finishes off-dry, grainy and hoppy in just about the right amounts.
Overall, this seems like more of a dumbed-down Yankee pale ale, one that is designed to complement an Italian pizza joint's goodness, and not necessarily stand out on its own - note to self: duh. Easy enough to drink, and a sweet enough foil for the surprisingly zingy Vesuvio pizza.
