341ml bottle, part of this year's (Vol. 4) Brews Brothers mixed 12 pack, the theme being 'New Wave'. A collaboration with Bad Tattoo out of Penticton, they've produced a 'Persimmon Belgian Scotch Ale', presumably without a kitchen sink. Classic Duran Duran provides the musical accompaniment.
This beer pours a clear, dark bronzed amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some decent splatter pattern lace around the glass as it quickly sinks out of sight.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, biscuity toffee, a gentle Belgian yeastiness, some generic sweet fruity notes, a mild nuttiness, and some plain earthy, musty, and floral hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, toffee, lightly phenolic yeast, a still hard to identify dark fruitiness, brown sugar, and more understated earthy, herbal, and musky floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly laid-back in its insouciant frothiness, the body an adequate medium weight, and generally smooth, with nothing really taking the time to mess about here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and fading fruitiness keeping the home fires burning.
Overall - this comes across as much more Scotch Ale in nature than any of the adjuncts. It hides the extra 2 or so points with ease, and is quite pleasant to drink, given that the yeast keeps its hands to itself, for the most part. And yeah, my mouth is alive with juices like wine, at least a little bit.
