341ml bottle, part of this year's (Vol. 4) Brews Brothers mixed 12 pack, the theme being 'New Wave'. A collaboration with Mount Arrowsmith Brewing from Parksville on the big island. Devo obviously provides the song reference here, but I just can't get the sound out of my head of Stewie from Family Guy pronouncing it!
This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden yellow colour, with one rather skinny finger of weakly puffy, bubbly, and mostly just fizzy dirty white head, which leaves absolutely nothing in the way of lace anywhere near the glass as it quickly evaporates.
It smells of semi-sweet, grainy and bready caramel malt, stewed apples, a bit of nail polish remover, simple syrup, ethereal Belgian yeast, and some plain leafy, musty, and perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, some apple and pear fruitiness, candi sugar, a thankfully faded acetone essence, some equally tame Low Countries yeastiness, hints of earthy spice, and more well-understated leafy, herbal, and lit-up floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly restrained in its placid-seeming frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, as that estery alcohol creates a minor snag in the proceedings here. It finishes off-dry, but not by all that much, really.
Overall - this one ended up a lot better than first impressions might have led me to believe. It's not as sweet as I have made it sound, and the elevated ABV is integrated, for the most part. Not the greatest version of the style, but drinkable all the same.
