Black Rocks is a dark rich beauty with pronounced coffee and chocolate flavors. She starts out harmless enough with the use of chocolate, caramel, and black malts and roasted barley. Over 300 lbs of base malt brings this up to a robust 6.7% ABV with west coast hops spicing up the finish and giving it a hop bite to cleanse the sweetness of that chocolate cake your eating. Brewed by my wife, for my wife, and ended up just like her! And that's all I have to say about that.

Howler brought home and poured into a mug.
The appearance was a sturdy black color and had a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a mild pace. Some lace ran here and there, somewhat messy.
The aroma had a nice blend of sweet, bitter and roasty portions of coffee up front and then a mild milk chocolate rolling underneath. Some light dark chocolate nibs were noticeable.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet and roasty side initially and then developed a little bit of bitter as it warmed. Nice faint aftertaste of the roast and the sweet of the chocolate portions seemed appropriate.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under with a fair sessionability about it. Some ruggedness of the roasted potion of the malts seemed to clench my tongue, but it wasn't distracting. Carbonation felt fairly low but acceptable. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, for the most part, it's a pretty good American Stout that I'd have again.

Grabbed one on nitro at the Boothbay Craft Brewery in Boothbay Harbor. Beautiful two finger dark brown head. Aromas of nuts, wood, coffee and malt. Taste has coffee, chocolate and malty finish. Heavy body initially, but it kind of disappears quickly after a sip. Not much for lingering flavors. Still an excellent choice.

From the growler into my nonic:
A: black body gives a two finger foamy tan head that gently spider webs and concaves into the body
S: strong notes of roasted coffee and chocolate. Some malts come out subtley as the beer warms.
T: has the coffee and chocolate dominating as some of that nice malty flavoring comes out once again as the beer warms.
M: medium to heavy, yet still drinkable, dry bitter aftertaste and finish
O: I really like this and would definitely have it again. I will be making more trips to the Boothbay area as more of their beers come out.
