"Horse Collar (Imperial Rye India Pale Ale) – This experimental “RyePA” features a spicy rye kick that is mellowed by high alpha flavoring and aroma hops that contribute a floral aroma. ABV: 7.7 IBU: 73"
Served on tap at The Monkey's Paw in a footed tulip glass.
Bright saturated orange body, good clarity, lasting creamy foam on the surface. Some soapy lacing inside the glass adds a nice visual element, and the level of head retention was good.
Earthy grains in the aroma, plenty of rye, with a back note of light floral hoppiness. Smooth creamy feel, mellow carbonation, medium bodied. Flavors of rye grains dominate, earthy and lightly spicy, augmented but a moderate hoppy bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste. Pretty dry and not sweet really. Pretty well balanced, not super sweet or maxed out on hops like so many DIPA's, this is a bit more tame. Overall a great first beer from this new brewery that came out of nowhere. Looking forward to getting down to the brewery someday... meanwhile for those that can't, check it out at the Monkey's Paw.
