i was excited to try this one at the brewery, these banished beers have been rad, but this one was a big letdown for me, the only beer i didnt like during our visit to this incredible place. its their normal pils i think, aged in red wine barrels with brett. it tastes super young and underdeveloped on the brett side, a little stinky in the nose, some rotting fruit character with the oak, just not there, maybe it needs more time, maybe something went off, but i left half the glass on the table, and i almost never do that. the identity of the base pils seems lost too, i dont taste much from the grain, the yeast character is nearly gone, and the hops that help make it crisp in the finish are covered up by wood weight and dried fruitiness from the wine. its the fermentation profile though that makes this kind of yucky. compost, stomach acid, and white wine vinegar, oddly enough. its nice and light, and the bubble are there, but there is an almost medicinal waste character to this, iodine and bandaids and stuff that just make it not very desirable, at least to me. i know sometimes when brett is still getting established it can be a little weird, but this is past that. if this gets bottled up and has some time to evolve i could see it rounding into form, but from the tap right now its one to skip. i assume its just young, as these guys know what they are doing as well as anyone, its just not ready yet i reckon...
