I have one of their Stouts in my cellar for a later date. I was given this beer by my friend. The temperature is 40 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The pour created a bright white one-finger foamy with average retention. The color charts around SRM 10, pale amber with light copper hues. The clarity is mostly clear with a few yeasty running around. The beer has an average appearance. 3.75
The initial aromas are caramel, toasted bread, grapefruit, resin, orange, and floral. Nosing the glass further, I smell orange, mangos, lightly toasted malts, a hint of candied fruit.
The flavors are grass, herbal, grapefruit, candied orange, caramel, lightly toasted bread, resin, pine, and peaches.
The mouthfeel is tannic and bitter. The body is medium-plus, with medium carbonation; and a lingering finish.
I have drunk several of these IPAs, but my opinion remains the same. They are mediocre IPA. The malt profile is bulging and not allowing the hops to burst through. I checked my notes from when these were fresh, and they did not change. An American IPA should rip with hops with a firm but gentle malt backbone. The malts need to be the co-star, not the star.

Poured from a 16 ounce can into an IPA glass.

Look- White frothy head, hazy, medium gold, above average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Floral, bready.

Taste- Tangerine, earthy, slightly bready.

Feel- Astringent, moderate bitterness, between thin and medium body, dry, slightly above average carbonation.

Overall- Flavor profile was surprising to me based on hops in this beer.

I wanted to love this. I really did. It sounds amazing, and I have enjoyed the other Crux Fermentation Project offerings I’ve tried.

Purchased at TJ’s - 4-pack 16oz cans, production date of July 2x, 2020, purchased and tasted on sept 12, 2020. Not super fresh, but not too old either (though TJ’s practice of storing/displaying these at room temperature always seems iffy to me)

Cracked a nicely chilled can open, poured into a pint glass (imperial pint).

Foamy white head - bubble bath appearance - settled down rather quickly, within a couple of minutes, leaving light lacing on the glass and a minimal rim of white, left over from the head.

Smelled delicious! Piney notes along with some light herbal fragrance, and some fruitiness, but not overwhelmingly juicy-smelling.

Taste... this is where I was thrown off. I experienced a pervasive soapy/detergent-like taste as the ale passed to the back of my palate, and as it went down my throat - along with an accompanying and similarly soapy fragrance, as the fumes from the ale rose from the back of my palate, making their way into my nasal cavity.

This isn’t in any way the dominant flavor, and there are other pleasant aspects of the flavor profile, which I won’t even bother describing, because despite being a non-dominant flavor,
this soapy/detergent (kind of like some kind of dishwashing detergent, with a mild but artificial fragrance) element is so disturbing and unwanted, that it is unfortunately the most memorable, and, in its own way, dominates flavors which are actually stronger than the soapy flavor. It’s like a partially impotent little guy with Napoleon syndrome, bending and manipulating larger characters to his will, simply by being loud and obnoxious.

I’m wondering if this batch is just off somehow, since nobody mentioned soapiness. Believe me, if you tasted what I tasted, you wouldn't be able to NOT mention it.

A hazy NWIPA look, solid head, nice nose of floral and pine from the Mosaic hops. Dry and well-balanced, no off tastes or harshness. A very tasty IPA in a region with literally thousands of variations on the same theme. Tough to stand up in that crowd, but we think Crux has a good one going.

16oz canned in late June, poured into a can-shaped nonic. Clear, chill-hazed sunset straw pour with visible carbonation and a finger of fluffy white head that dissipates at a medium rate, minimal lacing. Fairly old-school NWPA here with notes of dank/resin, earthy hops, biscuity malt, ripe tropical fruit flesh, blueberry, balanced sweetness and bitterness. A decent Galaxy & Mosaic IPA but really nothing special with all the offering decent offerings out.

Pint can from a Crux 4 pack served in a can glass. Beer is moderate to heavily hazy, with a load of white foam. Good juicy aroma of fruit punch with a bit of tropical fruit. Flavor has a good edge to it but also tropical flavors of pineapple and guava. Galaxy and Mosaic dry hops make for an epic DIPA. This is a fantastic IPA and I'm hard pressed to find any fault in it. One of my favorites from Crux to be sure.

anything new from crux, i am all about it, and this is another banger, good and hoppy, but balanced and drinkable, almost presents itself as a strong pale or something to me, hop driven and slightly resinous in feel, but balanced with some nice barley malt and well refined and low bitterness enough to meet pale ale standards in everything except alcohol content, which is real well in the back here. a little color to this, a honey tone, good stick to the edges white head, some light peppery notes to the hops, pine, and ripe mango flesh, a cool complexion, maybe some mosaic but that cannot be all, sturdy through the whole thing, aroma and flavor identical, fresh as can be, and a nice pint out at a bar again, boy have i missed that over the last few months with the virus and all! crux always makes a nice ipa type, and this is another good one, even relatively distinctive with a potential southern hemisphere hop element among the mosaic, or what i perceive to be mosaic, but this is robust all year beer for me, delicious and high end, nice with a spicy turkey burger with mushrooms and green chili peppers, and a beer i will not hesitate to order again when i see it!

Crowler from Growler Guys. Golden pour, small persistent head. Malty aroma with a resiny, old school hop essence. First taste brings the piney, hoppy flavors, full, bitter and then the malts come in, caramel, leather, dry. A nice crack at the NW style.

Canned 09 April 2020, purchased at TJ's. Dry hopped with Galaxy and Mosaic.

A clear golden yellow with a dense, white head with good retention and lacing, this looks great. The nose has a lot of mango and papaya, ripe, peachy, pulpy and quite clean. Pine and a light alcohol bite are present. A doughy, grainy malt backbone with minimal sweetness is present. The palate opens bitter and mildly pungent, clean with a mild doughy malt character. The mid palate has a lot of fruity flavor with mango, papaya and peach. A little melon too. Pine is present as a strong and persistent undercurrent. Drying, bitter and mildly fruity on the finish, this is just a touch watery. Moderate carbonation. Solid.

16oz can (dated 4/19/20) poured into 14oz teku. Poured a nice bright, clean, clear medium gold color with an inch-and-a-half of white head that had good retention and lacing.

The aroma was certainly hop forward, with some earthy funk at the front and some slight citrus at the back.

Same on the tongue, with a nice bit of bitterness towards the rear of the palate.

The body was medium, leaning towards the solid side, and had a mostly dry finish.

Drinkability was good, i likely wouldn't have two in a row, but would drink again.

Overall, a nicely solid and enjoyable brew. Worth trying if you see it.
