A-Black with dark brown highlights. A never reducing dark tan, firm head....simply awesome.

S-Good strong dark coffee scent. Some hints of roasted malts after the coffee is done with you.

T-Like a creamy strong cup of bitter roast coffee--soooo awesome! This is some seriously good stuff, very full flavoured, superb!

M-Medium bodied, creamy. The nitro delivery aids the brew very well.

D-This is excellent stuff. About as good as Pisgah Valdez IMHO. Maybe not quite as aromatic but that might have to due with that ridiculous head! Taste wise though...well, the two are right on par with each other!

Served via nitro-pour at the brewpub.

Pours a very dark brown (heck, it's pretty much black) with some ruby hightlights that dance around the bottom of the glass and a finger of creamy, burnt tan head. Retains beautifully and leaves heavy lacing all the way down the sides of the glass. The aroma is Wow! This is seriously the best smelling Coffee Stout I've tried yet! It's gives off the same exact smell as a simmering cup of coffee, with dark roasted accents and zippy espresso notes.

The taste isn't quite as awesome as the aroma but it's pretty darn close. It's chock full of a dry roasted malt and coffee bitterness up front with a enough sweetness behind it to help pulls things back a little. A very authentic taste! The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy via the nitro pour and just goes down as easy as can be.

Wow, this is just a fantastic Coffee Stout! Very authentic in the aroma and taste and oh so drinkable. Otto's needs to bottle this guy pronto!

Arguably one of the best beers I've ever had. I love all different types of beers. I also happen to love coffee. This beer combines both. This is a great beer to sit back and relax with friends. It is not a great beer to drink excessively because it can be very overpowering in large doses.

Growler filled from a nitro-pour...
Appearance is near black with a dark brown hue and a mild, tan cap that slowly fades into a gentle cap. Spots of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of the obvious coffee, cocoa, vanilla, and toasted nuts.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with the coffee being the huge standout among the flavors.
Mouthfeel is very much full of coffee grounds with a dryness and mild astringency that takes you for a ride.
Overall, not bad.

A nitro-poured pint served at the brewery in State College, PA.

A: The stout is dark, very dark. The darkness is a startling contrast to the thick white nitro head that is billowy and concentrated.

S: Nose is bitter coffee grounds, deep roasted and chocolatey.

T: This beer is not just influenced by coffee, it is coffee. The first flavors to register are bitter acrid roasted coffee notes, thick and over-roasted like Starbucks. The dryness is enhanced by the dry roasted malt flavors that multiply sharpness. The finish returns to freshly ground coffee, bold and strong but well in place in the beer.

M: The mouthfeel is basically coffee grinds, or at least how I imagine they taste. The coffee really brings out the dryness of the stout.

D: This is an easy drink, the flavors are bold while the alcohol is restrained.

A decent Irish dry Stout. Maybe not exceptional but it was a worthy representation of the style.

Appearance: Thick creamy foam head on a black body.

Smell: Roasty! Typical dry stout aroma of burnt malts and coffee.

Taste: The unique attribute in the roasty flavor was cream. It seemed to very roasty coffee with Cream. Creamy texture with and hint of cream flavor in the coffee.

Mouthfeel: Silky super smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Guinness was my every-day session beer for years. The simple dry stout is remarkably easy drinking for me.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

What could be better than coffee and beer? If you are a fan of both of these brewed products, you'll like Otto's Sumatra Stout.

Sumatra has an unquestionably full coffee aroma, with an equally full coffee taste. I thought it was a little "thin" on mouthfeel, however.

I would have given it slightly higher marks for taste, but it seemed a bit out of balance--the flavor was almost all coffee with just a hint of malt-beverage undertones.

Still, I don't want this to sound like a negative review: I liked it and found it quite drinkable. The next time I am in the area, I would certainly have another.

Appearance: Almost completely black with a large, creamy, tan head that had very good retention. Nice rings of lacing.

Smell: Holy coffee, Batman! Dominated by the aroma of freshly-roasted coffee beans. Sweet roasted malts and a little bitter chocolate. I did pick up a phenolic/paint thinner smell on the one pint, but I think that was just sanitizer in the glass or the line, because I didn’t pick that scent up any of the other times I had it.

Taste: Hey, whaddya know! Coffee. No real surprise, being that it’s brewed with Sumatra Mandeling coffee. It’s an interesting combination, the dryness of the stout and the rich, bitter coffee. Only problem is that the coffee is SO strong, it’s hard to taste much else. Too bad, because under the coffee lies a pleasant roasted, nutty malt flavor. The finish is long in duration with flavors of strong, bitter coffee refusing to let go of your tastebuds.

Mouthfeel: Kind of surprising to describe it like this after talking about such a big and bold look, smell and taste. But it’s actually rather light. Thin-medium body and a creamy texture turning dry.

Drinkability: If you love good coffee, this is the beer for you. Very surprisingly easy to drink and light, even with the HUGE coffee presence. The coffee was too much for my liking, as I thought it overpowered the rest of the beer, but my wife adores this beer and wouldn’t change a thing. I also prefer a meatier-feeling stout.
