This doppelbock replaced the Duffinator, which was named after a manager who is no longer with them. So instead, the new manager, Jeff Varco, gets a beer named after him. And it is quite different from the Duffinator.
Pours a clear deep reddish-copper with a small, light tan, foamy head that quickly diminishes and leaves some spotty lacing. The smell is lightly sweet with BIG roasted malts and aromas of molasses, caramel, raisin and hints of pear, chocolate, and nuts. The taste follows with more dominant roasted malts, but more of a cherry fruitiness and plenty of alcohol esters. The finish is very long and lightly fruity with a nice warming sensation. It has a full body, chewy texture, and low carbonation. Its one of those beers that I start out thinking is ok, but by the time I get to the bottom of it I love it and crave another. But I think its definitely worth trying if youre ever passing through the State College area.
