A-Dark muddy brown with a thin tan head.

S-Light dark fruits, sweet roasty grains and a bit of brown sugar.

T-Subtle but building flavours of brown sugar and a bit of a hoppy bite. Good drying qualities build as you drink.A lot of flavour packed into a 3.2% brew. Very tasty.

M-Medium body with a nice astringent quality.

D-Off the charts! All that flavour at 3.2%, what more could you ask for? When done right, like this one is, a dark mild is a the session beer for beer drinkers!

Originally reviewed May 29, 2007. On Cask. Light warm aroma of bourbon fruits, grains and toothy caramel sugars. Gentle and caressing. Pours medium ruddy brown, with rim of cask tan. Flavor is a subtle, subdued sweet candy hops and orange rind. Great minty leaf smack for a great finish and smack. Toothy. Stellar drinkability, perfect ester profile, beautiful malt construction and deft hop balance. Awesome.

Pulled by hand-pump from cask into a shaker glass. Beatiful transparent dark beer with a fine-buddled white head. Carbonation levels are low so this does fade after a while. Aroma is of the dark roasted/toasted grains. Flavor likewise is of dark roasted/toasted grains with some lingering chocolate sweetness and a faint almost "blackberry" fruity flavor. Finish brings some slight hop bitterness, some drying burnt malt notes but doesn't change the very smooth & easy drinking nature of the brew. May be just a bit "watery" to some, but as the Little Brother (in flavor) to the Zeno's XXX Old Ale (itself a good brew), and at only 3.2%, this is an absolutely wonderful session beer. Drink these slowly and enjoy a quiet evening without any ill effects, that's always a good plan.

The hand pump produces a one finger light tan head that lasts the entire pint. The body is a slightly transparent dark brown. The nose is just a bit of toasted malt. The taste is indeed very mild, perhaps a little soapy, with a bit of floral hoppiness. The mouth is very smooth, due to the light body and low carbonation. The beer is a little rough around the edges when quaffing it, though, so I lowered the drinkability.

On cask at Zeno's. Very dark brown with a beautiful head that remains the whole way down the glass. Smell is dominated by toasted malt. Taste is toasted malt, some malt sweetness, and a touch of floral hops. Finishes with a touch of dark malt bitterness. Very balanced and pleasant taste. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy - fantastic. Exceptionally drinkable. Really great beer overall.
