This is a one-off old ale-farmhouse ale collaboration to celebrate State College Brew Expo's 10th Anniversary. It is one of only two beers that I took detailed notes on early in the Brew Expo.
A: The ale, for being a saison-old ale mix, is much lighter and closer to a saison than a robust dark amber old ale. The color is cloudy and brown, with a decent sized head that does not retain.
S: The nose is a very funky combination of saison's barnyard aromas and old ale's thick maltiness. The saison yeast adds a pleasant funkiness that compliments the grainy old ale malts quite nicely.
T: The ale picks the best of the source beers, with a large grainy taste that is strong to the point of sweetness. It is nicely paired with a slightly tart yeast. The malts speak for themselves, adding a biscuity quality with just a touch of alcoholic warmth. The yeast is funky, but reserved enough to prevent the beer from going completely tart. I am generally intrigued by the ale, a combination of two distinct beer lines (UK/American and Belgian) that brings out the best qualities of both.
M: The light saison flavors, with their funkhouse (thanks to Ommegang for that wonderbar word) undertones, cut right through the normally malty old ale and create on heckuva hybrid.
D: I went back for multiple pours of this beer and loved every one. Unfortunately for most, this is a one-off that few will get to try. Kudos to Otto's for blending two disparate styles with excellent results.
