On tap @ the brewpub on 6/13/09. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a deep, clear, coppery amber that is topped with a thin head of soft off-white foam. Retains with a creamy look around the edges, throwing some nice looking rich lace up on the sides of the glass. The aroma is very sweet from the breadiness of the Munich malts but some generous Noble hops character is also present, spicing this up nicely and giving things a bit of a gingerbread scent in the nose. Some lively light floral hops also bounce along the back.
The solidness of this carries over to the taste, with the malts being tight up front but then spreading out into a toasty breaded bloom of sweetness and sharp hop spicing, which gives this a completely satisfying finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a firm feel and a nice sharp carbonation that really helps to bring out the spicier notes in this. This just feels spot on for the style.
Very nicely done Dunkel here, with a deep richness to it, thanks to a great balance between the sweetness of the Munich malts and the assertive spicing of the Noble hop character. And at 4.7%, this goes down waaaay too easy. I could sit around and drink pints of this all day!
