Poured hard at 45°F from a 22oz bottle (bottled on 26Nov15) into a Spiegelau Stout glass. Consumed on 24Feb16.
LOOK: Pours with three fingers worth of cinnamon colored foam. At 30 seconds, the head has shrunk by 1 finger and has changed color to khaki. At 3 minutes and 30 seconds, the head has dissipated into a a quarter fingers worth. Black in color with an orange tint. Rising bubbles are very small in size and subtle in quantity. Lacing is moderate in quantity and thin.
SMELL: A huge coffee bomb! Extremely strong aromas of bittersweet coffee are backed by mild bittersweet chocolate aromas and subtle aromas of bitter roasted malts and hints of vanilla.
TASTE: Very strong coffee flavors first strike the palate and remain the only flavors perceived for about 2 seconds until mild bittersweet chocolate flavors enter. Subtle vanilla and bitter roasted malt flavors enter lastly as both previous flavors persist.
FEEL: Medium-bodied and moderately carbonated. Goes down somewhat smooth. Finishes with a strong dryness.
NOTE: I thought Wigsplitter from 3 Floyds was a coffee bomb, but this right here set a new standard for coffee stouts. I'm not too big on bitterness, but it was well balanced by the sweetness. Coffee lovers, this just might be your beer!

Guadalupe seems to keep coming out with beers with similar labels and names; don't confuse this with their Chocolate Stout or Coffee Chocolate Stout.

22 fl oz brown glass BOTTLE purchased at Whichcraft in Austin, TX and served cold into a pilsner glass. Reviewed live as a coffee cocoa stout per the label. Expectations are above average given the brewery. Bottled: 3/2/15.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1 inch wide. Fizzy and thin, with a khaki colour. Decent complexion and consistency. Subpar (~1 minute) retention. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque solid black.

Appears undercarbonated and weak. An average appearance for a beer of its style at best.

AROMA: Walnuts, caramelization, bland coffee, nice espresso character, dark malts, chocolate malts, and a kiss of underdeveloped roast. Suggests a slightly acidic brew with a lackluster balance.

Aromatic intensity is average. The espresso character stands out, but otherwise this seems poorly executed.

TASTE: The espresso is okay. Caramelized walnut notes are prominent, and I'm not sure why. Has a generic chocolate malt and dark malt backbone. Lacks cream, roasted barley, or any expressive coffee character whatsoever. It's a muted flavour profile overall, but is has fair cohesion and balance. A bit sweeter than you might expect given the implementation of coffee. There's just not much (of worth) to say about it given its plainness and simplicity.

TEXTURE: A bit undercarbonated. Has a weak stale presence on the palate, with an unnaturally thin mouthfeel. Doesn't complement the taste well at all. There's no harmony of texture to taste.

OVERALL: Tastes like above average homebrew. In fairness, though, your buddy's Folgers homebrew might be a better bet than this; the coffee is direly inexpressive. I've enjoyed Guadalupe's other stouts, but this is a rudimentary uninspired brew with some mild acridity given the prominence of the espresso beans. I wouldn't buy it again by any means, and it's rather overpriced for its (lack of) quality. The discerning drinker would be best served skipping this, but it's drinkable, sure.
