1516 Heller Bock

1516 Heller Bock from Red Oak. Received on 25/3/21 in a LIF from nc41. 16 oz can. Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 28/3/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom stamped “CANNED ON 02/24/2021”. Served at 47.8 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 54.3 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Gold (SRM 4), clear.
Body – Gold (SRM 5), slight haze. When rear-lite, same but effervescence evident.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.5 cm, aggressive center pour), white smoke, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a one to two mm crown fed by effervescence and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Sweet, lightly toasted malt and a bit of yeasty bread, no hops.
Flavor – 4.25 – Taste follows nose exactly. Again, no hops flavor but a slight bitterness that cuts the malt sweetness is apparent. No alcohol (7 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 An excellent heller bock! If I close my eyes and sip, I can see the skyline of Bamberg through the chestnut leaves. Who says a 600-year-old rule doesn’t still work?

Poured from a tap into a pint glass.
Looks golden yellow with a nice foamy head and lacing.
Smells floral, spicy, malty.
Taste follows the nose with carmel on the front.
Mouth feel is medium for the style.
Overall a very Maibock that I would definitely order again.

Came a rich deep golden with a full one finger + white head atop,a nice looking pale bock.Mild caramel and bread dough in the nose with decent amount of toasted grain as well.Toasted grain and caramel flavors,slight vegetal notes came thru as I drank more.Red Oak did a fine job here,I'am a fan of spring bock's and am a fan of this one.

Simply amazing! This bock is so drinkable, at 7%abv, one could find themselves in a bit of trouble ;). This is my favorite Red Oak offering, and of course it's only brewed seasonally, cest'la vie, enjoy it while you can!

 

 

Limited release "Celebrating 500 Years of Purity" per the label to celebrate the Reinheitsgebot of 1516. Bavarian Heller Bock, unfiltered and unpasteurized. Purchased a 12 pack from local grocery near the brewery. Quite pricey at more than $3 a bottle, but I thought it was worth it to share at a special occasion event and it came with 3 metal tokens that can be exchanged for brewery tours valued at $15 each. Poured into a Preyer Brewing pint glass.
Look - deep golden caramel, nice creamy looking head that dissipated quickly. Very slight lacing.
Smell - Malty goodness
Taste - Malty on the front end then a hit of the alcohol which subsides into a malty aftertaste, hops not very noticeable at all.
Feel - Good mouth feel, took a drink, rolled it around, felt slight carbonation on the tongue, pretty smooth other than the short lived hit of the alcohol. The malt really comes through.
Overall - A very good lager beer, with more kick than their Hummin' Bird Munich Helles. Given the limited release and the price point, I'll stick with Hummin' Bird when I want a dose of malty lager goodness.
