BB: 08.10.2014. Labbel is great. 6.40% ABV. Gravity: 14.9%. 33cl brown glass bottle with branded white pry-off pressure cap acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin, Germany, and served cold into a Berliner Kindl Weisse glass in me friend's gaff in Berlin. Reviewed live. Expectations are low; I tried their Dry Stout yesterday and it was dreadfully misconceived given the style. I'm hoping this is better.
Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: 2.5 fingers wide. Khaki colour head. Decently creamy and thick. It's a bit weak and airy for a milk stout head. No lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is good - about 7 minutes.
BODY: Opaque dark brown-black. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Not quite a solid jet black.
Like Camba's dry stout, this is leaning more towards a schwarzbier than the intended style. Far from unique or special. I'm suspicious already.
AROMA: Cocoa powder, dark malts, chocolate malts, and milk/lactose sugar - I guess. Pretty mundane for a milk stout overall. The malty core is lackluster, and it lacks sufficient creaminess and sweetness. I can't say it's inviting.
No yeast character, hop notes, alcohol, or other off-notes are detectable.
So far, this seems midway between a schwarzbier and a milk stout. It's an inoffensive aroma of average strength overall.
TEXTURE: Smooth, lightly dry (which is completely wrong for the style), lightly creamy, refreshing, lightly soft, medium-bodied, and a bit thin. Lacks sufficient heft and weight on the palate for the style. Overall presence is subpar. This texture just isn't creamy or silky enough for a milk stout. A bit overcarbonated as well.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh.
TASTE: Chocolate malts, faint hints of cocoa dust, dark malts, and a mild malty sweetness. Poorly built for a milk stout, featuring none of the cream and lactose sugar the style demands. Imbalanced. Leans heavily towards a schwarzbier, to its extreme detriment.
Shallow depth of flavour. Below average duration and intensity of flavour. Painfully simple, lacking the subtlety and intricacy necessary in a good milk stout. Lacks cohesion. Certainly not gestalt.
Overall, it's a sad excuse for a milk stout, but as a schwarzbier I guess it's tolerable. I can't say I like it, really. Hugely disappointing.
OVERALL: I applaud any Germany brewery that attempts an ale or foreign style, but this is a piss-poor effort which completely falls flat. Maybe Bavarians should stick to what they're good at. I'd caution against purchasing this. I'll finish the bottle, but it's not every drinkable on account of the subpar quality. Expect a schwarzbier - and a below average one at that.
