33cl brown glass bottle with intriguing label and white branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at Hopfen Und Malz in Berlin and served cold into a Berliner Kindl Weiss glass at me friend's gaff in Berlin, Germany. Reviewed live. Expectations are high as this is my favourite style. Best before 08/08/2014. Gravity: 10.5%.
Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Pours a quarter finger wide head of khaki colour. Recedes fully in less than 2 minutes, leaving no lacing. It's a very lackluster head for a dry stout, lacking any creaminess, thickness, and staying power whatsoever. Quite abysmal for the style.
BODY: Solid opaque black. No yeast particles or hop sediment is visible.
Appears undercarbonated. Overall, it's a terrible appearance for a dry stout, but outside of style conventions it isn't bad. I can't say I'm horribly excited to try it.
AROMA: Dark schwarzbier-esque/cola-esque malts. Some herbal notes - sassafras, perhaps? Fennel? Licorice/anise? Raisin. Caramel. A hint of roasted barley, but nowhere near enough. A dry stout demands a roasted barley core with ample amounts of cream and chocolate malts, but this is not delivering.
No overt yeast or hop character is detectable.
It's really more of a schwarzbier than what it claims to be. An inoffensive aroma of above average strength.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, fizzy, and way too damn thick. Almost syrupy. Too viscous. Decently carbonated. Medium-bodied.
This is a terrible texture for a purported dry stout; it's not creamy, soft, and supple, and it just has a horrid overall presence on the palate.
But for a schwarzbier, it's what I'd expect.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, or harsh.
Very poorly executed overall.
TASTE: Awful for a dry stout, but passable for a schwarzbier. Cola notes, sassafras, mild herbal notes, a kiss of amaretto, faint anise, and dark malts. Lacks any roasted barley or chocolate character whatsoever. Lacks cream as well. I don't find any yeast character or hop character, which is to style.
This beer is really hard to like. Shallow depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour. Horribly imbalanced considering the style. Built very poorly. Bleh.
OVERALL: This was worse than I ever could have expected - even seeing as it's a German brewery attempting an Irish style. And "attempting" is the right word indeed. This is a poor effort, and I wouldn't dare get it again. I picked up a couple other brews from this brewery, and I'm now fearing trying them. A colossal failure at what it's trying to do. I only give it a D- because it's not watery.
