Birradamare SRL " 'naBIO "
33 cl. green-brown glass bottle, "BEST BEFORE END OF 02 2017"
4,39€ @ Carrefour Express, Roma Via Viminale, 35, Roma, 00184
'naBIO is an organic beer that utilizes 3.5% unmalted spelt in the grain bill. All of the malts are organic, as are the hops and the added cane sugar.
It's quite hazy, making it's golden body appear almost brass-like in color. The head is white, and rises up quickly when poured only to settle almost immediately into a wide collar and whispy surface covering. As might be expected the lacing is minimal.
Despite it's limited percentage, the spelt is clear in both the aroma and the flavor. If you're not used to it you might find it a little off putting. Beyond that there's a little bit of actual "yeast" aroma, but very little hop.
In the mouth it's medium-light in body and mildly crisp with a moderate carbonation that gently caresses the tongue.
Its balanced in the flavor, with a touch of sweetness from the malt anchored by a very firm bitterness. It's grainy, and spelt-ish (wheat might be a good comparison, but it's also a bit woody) and also slightly fruity from the yeast. Again, what's missing are hops, although there's more to be found here than in the nose, just lightly grassy and herbal. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately if you happen to like it, there's also a bit of buttery diacetyl to it. That can be an essential aspect of some English ale yeasts, and I wouldn't doubt that one was chosen specifically as it seems to work with the spelt.
If "organic" is your thing then this might be for you, although there are better, or shall I say more 'beer-like' examples available. I'll give it credit for originality though, and even forgive the lack of hop flavor and aroma as it allows the spelt to come through more clearly. Worth trying.

Unusual label - looks like a homeopathic remedy that my wife would buy.
Very fizzy and foams everywhere on opening.
Nose is cornbread and not much else.
Tastes like more corn. One-dimensional.
Mouthfeel is soapy and watery. Not enjoying this, though perhaps I missed the point.

Oranged blond, quite hazy. Off-white foam.
Malty and grainy smell, some honey, a bit too heavy.
Not much better taste, maybe just a bit.
Strong maltiness, biscuit, too full.
Some hop in the atertaste, nothing great.
Too heavy, grainy, for the low alcohol level.
