Germans occasionally refer to hefeweizen as “Flaschenbrot,” or bottled bread. pFriem Hefeweizen certainly starts with wheat and yeast, though a pint of it is also packed with flavors of fresh banana, aromas of lemon meringue and notes of cloves and nutmeg. Take a sip, and we think you’ll realize there’s more than just bread in this bottle.

Bottle: Poured a slight hazy blonde color Hefe with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice wheat malt notes with light bubble gum and bready yeast notes. Taste is a very drinkable mix of wheat malt notes with some bubblegum notes, some residual sugar and a bready yeast finale. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Well brewed according to style with very good drinkability.

500ml bottle

Pours over a finger of white head into my wheat glass, dissipates somewhat quickly. Initial lacing looks decent. Large amounts of bubbles coming up. Body is a little cloudy, but overall this is way clearer than the norm, looks more like a kristalweizen. Maybe a hair lighter in color as well, as it is a light shade of yellow. Looks ok so far.

Nose is very nice, banana, clove, loads of esters. At first the malt profile smelled on the lighter side, not very bready, etc. After a few minutes, and a few good swirls, some better malt notes are coming through. Still maybe a hair on the light side, but it smells super yummy.

Starts off dry, with a mineral feel, not really any bubblegum, clove hits towards the end but is possibly the most potent. Just a touch of bread. The flavor is definitely very light, not just with the grain, but even passing along to the banana, and other esters. I could see some really appreciating this as a nice sessionable hef, but I personally want more flavor. Regardless, this seems closer to a kristalweizen, and possibly off style. Still a good flavor, but not perfect.

As mentioned, the mouth is very dry, super light bodied as well. Carbonation is medium-low at this point. While this is on style, I feel like I have had hefs that are a bit fuller, but who knows. I’ll try not to be too biased in the rating, but I would prefer a fuller body.

Drinkability is very high, this is light and tasty enough.

Appearance turned out quite poor. Pretty much zero lacing, and a below average head for a wheat beer.

Overall this is a quality beer, but there are areas that just seem to fall a little bit short of world class.

17oz bottle picked up at Central Market in Mill Creek, Washington.
Bottled date is 5/29/19 so it's pretty fresh. Served in a pint glass.

Look- Hazy, medium copper/gold color. Puffy, pure white head, leaving great layers of lacing on the glass.
Decent carbonation action in the glass as it sits. Prototypical hefeweizen appearance.

Smell- Strong banana, coriander and lemon rind. Some gingerbread, clove, caramel and bubblegum.

Taste- Graham crackers, banana cream pie, green banana, orange sorbet and nutmeg. Delicious notes of spicy yeast.
Slightly tart. Ends on a bittersweet hoppy taste with more notes of spicebread and sweet banana.

Feel- Medium bodied and creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.
Has a clean finish, pretty solid representation of this style of beer.

O- Remarkable American take on a traditional hefeweizen, comparable to some of the Bavarian standouts.
But that's what you get using traditional ingredients (Weihenstephan yeast, german pilsner malts, and Hollertau Tradition hops)

Wish I grabbed a few more of these.

Poured into a weizen glass. Pours a hazy, medium golden amber with a fine, two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of wheat with a bit of biscuit, mild banana, lemon and clove. Flavor is mildly grainy wheat, light lemon, banana and clove. Semi-dry wheat and mild clove finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess and sharp carbonation. A spot-on, very authentic tasting hefeweizen that could pass for an imported one, although perhaps a bit fresher tasting. I love this style and really have to buy one more often. Pfriem does their usual great job on this one.

Had this on 2019-06-03 in Portland, OR from a 500ml bottled on 2019-05-28

A - Lightly cloudy with a substantial 1.5- finger white head and good lace

S - Banana and light clove. Touch of noble spice.

T - Banana bread, apple cider with nutmeg, clove and then a spicy-grass-and-earthy finish.

M - Light-medium body and medium-plus carbonation. Dry finish.

O - Great balance. Super fresh and delicious. My kind of Hefe for sure. Seek it out.
