pFriem Export Lager is a testament to balance in brewing art. Aromas of lightly toasted bread, wildflowers, and a hint of white grape converge in this cross between a Helles and a Pilsner. Each sip balances pleasant malt sweetness with floral hops and a restrained bitterness. You may want to balance your last sip with another pint.

16oz can

Pours two fingers of fluffy white head into my Pilsner glass. Retention is average and the head steadily fades over the course of a few minutes, settling into a solid half finger. Lacing is patchy but mostly consistent down the glass. Body is golden yellow, crystal clear, with a moderate amount of bubbles coming up. Looks decent.

Nose has a stiff noble hop presence - grassy, subtle lemon, with a soft but sturdy malt backbone. Very clean, mineral, with just a touch of sweetness. Smells nice, balanced.

Solid grassy hop profile up front that quickly blends with a little bit of malt. Nothing special, but solid.

Carbonation is medium. Very light bodied. Bitterness is low. Definitely on the drier side, maybe a smidge of sweetness but really not much, nose is fuller in that regard. Perfectly fine for the mouthfeel.

Drinkability is solid.

Overall a straight forward Lager, with a somewhat hoppy edge.

Look: Crystal clear pale yellow with a nice-looking plump white head that holds as a pillow and slowly settles, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Cut grass, pilsner malt, floral hops, raw dough, warm bread, soda crackers, and straw
Taste: Lightly sweet bready malt opens it up and quickly joined by a wave of floral hop notes – pink jasmine, sweetbox, and daylily among them. Grass, straw, pilsner malt, and crackers battle for dominance in the middle before flowers re-assert themselves on the close
Mouthfeel: Light but full, very clean throughout, medium-high carbonation, and a nice crisp and clean finish with minimal felt dryness
Overall: Wow, this is good stuff. I’m not surprised though as these folks are among the best lager brewers in the state and this is just one of many examples that show why. A nice export lager with a bolder and hoppier aroma/taste but still with plenty of malt presence and a super clean and crisp finish. A welcome treat each time it’s been had and definitely one I’d recommend

Bottle from Market of Choice.

A clear straw yellow with a dense, white head with good retention and lacing this looks great. The nose is on point for the style. Soft, delicately doughy and sweet with a firm, earthy, minty hop bite, a little dust. Less sweet than others, but so clean. The palate opens sweet with honey, dough, a light biscuit like character, and a moderate bitterness. Lemony, snappy, mildly spicy, the hop character shines cleanly before a long, quenching finish with lemon, dough and snap. Awesome.

Pint at Westside Taphouse in West Salem OR.
$6.00.
Traditional golden clear body. Nice proportional white head.
Aroma is of biscuit malts with a touch of caramel and a nice kiss of floral hop.
Taste is similar to the aroma , bit more chewy maltiness.
Good mouth feel. Smooth, astutely carbonated.
Very much to the old German style.
Lovely

Pours a clear gold with long-lasting foam in the English-style nonic. Aroma of French bread with a whiff of alfalfa. Crisp but malty mouthfeel. Luxuriously carbonated without being excessive. Interesting taste of citrus with tangerine in the nose. Biscuits and a hint of lemon.

Clean flavors with a smooth intriguing taste all the way. As with all of these light and lagery brews from pFriem, totally worth a bottle or two. Somehow this one is just an excellent light beer. From the 500 ml bottle purhased at New Seasons in Stumptown.

Bottle 9/25:
A clear golden beer with a fluffy white head that yields a mess of lacing that forms odd structures against the glass.

Nose is a mix of bready malt with a light bit of grass to herbal hops. Taste has a nice crusty white bread flavor up front backed by hops reminiscent of the noble varieties. There’s a mix of dry grass with a bit of more biting green herbs. None of these flavors are bold nor are they too light and form a nicely composed lager.

From a bottle with bottle dated 9/23/19 poured into a Stange. A brilliantly clear golden hued lager, gorgeous to look at. The nose is faint, but grassy. Modest head dissipates quickly and lively carbonation constantly feeds from below. A light, crisp easy drinking mouthfeel. This is a clean lager beautifully balanced with Noble hops and that plays perfectly with cracker malt and lager yeast.
As per usual, PFriem delivers a style specific winner.

On Tap at McMenamins Cedar Hills
Look: brilliantly clear, highly polished gold, lovely lacing and a thin but perstent head.
Smell: lovely malt, clean like fresh driven snow
Taste: Softly sweet malt, finessed hop character, restrained yeast charecter but the slightest signature to give character.
Overall: this is a deserving stablemate to the delightful and a more complex Pilsner, this far more more straightforward; basically a high and clean 101mph fastball. I’ve had this in bottle as well and it’s great but fresh from the tap this is a thing of simple and pure beauty. Seek it out.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a one finger white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of bready and biscuit malt, citrus and grassy hops, lemon and apple. Flavor follows with bready malt with a little biscuit, grassy, mildly citrus hops, mixed grain and faint citrus. Lightly floral on the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. I think this was intended to be a Helles/German style lager, not an American one; both the malt and noble hops lean in a Continental direction. This is a very nice lager and a very authentic tasting helles style one at that. Great grain flavor throughout and clear noble hops flavors. Very refreshing and flavorful; nicely done.

A bottle just three weeks old. Bright light amber color, clear and sparkles. Frothy head, sticky lacing. Aroma of fresh bread dough, light grassiness as in a open meadow. Must be a pure barley malt brew, though the bottle doesn't say. It is everything a quality lager should be: clean taste, light bitterness in perfect balance, lightly carbonated and smooth finish. This is a splendid beer. When pFriem sets their sights on doing lager right, they hit it right out of the ballpark.
