With this different name, i’m not sure what differences this has with the old Vin Jaune VJ1 bottling from 2009 or earlier. Label states aged for a year in Vin Jaune barrels.
Bright jewel-tone clarity, dark reddish orange tone. Ample foam and lacing in the glass, a restrained “pfft” as it was opened. Carbonation present. Already a few improvements over the VJ1.
Aroma is fruity and acidic, possibly a touch briny. Restrained funk, wet woody notes lend some complexity. Oddly some solvent creeps in but not too distracting.
The Vin Jaune barrel lends a softness to the mouthfeel, rounded edges consistent with the oxidative wine from the Jura region, where BFM also hails from. Vinous and brightly acidic, crisp and dry. Tons of juicy red grape, some lemon and crabapple too. Medium bodied and fully attenuated, light carbonation. Overall it’s nice, similar to the standard issue Grand Cru but mellowed a bit by the wine barrels.
