This was yet another beer that I picked up at the Total Wine in Reno, Nevada when out that way last summer. Given that I ended up going to Anchor's last day, I hoped that this would measure up to their flagship offering. Sure, this may be famous around the lake but it paled (no pun intended) in comparison to my favorite steam beer!
Honey-hued and full of fine bubbles, this had a full and uneven head took it's time to settle down. A fair amount of soapy suds lingered around the middle of my pint glass as there weren't any hints of rings to be seen. Lightly sweet and floral in the nose, the taste had some lemon, grains of paradise, and bread as this seems like something that Sam Adams would brew. Lightly carbonated, just full enough, and a tad crisp, this was a bit chewy in the back as a bit of cracker emerged on the back end.
The malt was unassuming and so was the alcohol as it would have been a piece of cake to quaff a few cans of this in a sitting. Dated 5/30 of last year on the bottom of the can, this held up well but wasn't anything outstanding to begin with. If I made it back out that way and camped in the summer, I'd reach for this and drink my cares away...

Always quick to cash in on some marketing ability, Brewer's Cabinet bought this beer I guess from the last shitty brewery in the area that failed to stay afloat. Keeping in tradition, the beer continues its mundane ways.
Pours similar to an AAL in terms of color (yellow) and clarity, but it does seem to have a better head formation and retention than typical. Aroma is almost non existent. You can look for hops but you won't find them, there is a discernable grain quality to it. All barley? Hard to say. The fruity yeast notes of an Anchor Steam aren't there. You sure this is a steam beer yeast? Or did you just use a fermentation temperature thereof or vice versa?
Taste is an expected light bodied beer that will be attractive to non beer drinking tourists. Not bitter, not hoppy, not malty, no yeasty steam beer fruitiness. Lots of water. Since its often the same price or even more expensive than the superior originator, I dunno why you would want to get this beer unless you're just the type to gloat about Lake Tahoe via a beer made in Reno.

From a 12oz can. Golden color with a big white head. Smells of malt and straw. Medium feel. Tastes of bready malt and citrusy hops. More substantial than a lager/pilsener, but not as aggressive as an IPA. Nice!
