Muddier and lighter than I was anticipating. Large carbonation (not in terms of amount, but in terms of the size of the bubbles), more reminiscient of soda than beer in that regard. Deep ruddy murky mahogany. Head starts about a finger of intricate smoothe and beautiful dark manila. Sheen and gleam goodness. Settles in to a good thin cap-and-ring style. Good lacing.
The nose, which seemed so enticing when I first opened the cap, fades fairly quickly to a mild roasted graininess. Kind of disappointing to be honest.
There's some mild dark fruit sweetness to be had on the front end, before moving to a roastier grainier middle. Towards the end, we get closer to what I was expecting/hoping for with the leather and tobacco. Finish is more in the tobacco vein. Lingering, good finish. Perfect level of carbonation that jumps in lightly to poke the tongue awake, then steps out of the way. Clean and drinkable for sure.
Overall, I have to say this is kind of a disappointment. I've absolutely loved pretty much everything I've had from these guys, and am a fan of the old ale style, but this one just leaves too much to be desired. It's not bad by any means, but with the standard I feel these guys have earned, I had hoped for more.
