Growler picked up late last week from the taproom. Tasted 2 December 2015.
Pours a gorgeous clear orangey golden color. Two big fingers of fluffy white head, great retention and gobs of lacing that lasted until I finished the beer.
Smell is bright and citrusy hoppy, with a malty, yeasty fullness underneath. I'm not sure exactly what style this beer should be called, but it's a lot like the Belgian IPAs I've had in the past, with that combination of hops and yeast. Nice.
Taste is mostly good, but from my perspective, it has one major flaw. It starts out rich, sweet, and fruity, like a Belgian golden ale, but then this medicinal aspirin-like bitterness comes chiseling in and takes over completely. I sometimes get that flavor from certain hoppy beers, and I really don't like it. Enough that I doubt I'll drink this whole growler.
Feel is fine. Medium-bodied, plenty of carbonation, lasting (though with that medicinal taste, I want it gone).
I like everything about this beer except that sharpness in the flavor. Unfortunately, that one element kills the whole thing for me.
